Jump!

When reviewing new patch banks acquired on the net and/or from friends, set up a quick-jump button to the ZONES page so you won't miss any keyboard or velocity zone features (velocity features are the easiest to miss).

Go to the details page of any patch and enter the ZONES page. Then press the JUMP button (on WS keyboards, at the far right) TWICE, then select the softkey button you wish to take you back here in the future. Now, whenever you are testing a patch, you need only press the JUMP button ONCE, followed by the softkey you'd assigned, to jump right to the zones window so you can see whether the patch author built any surprises of this kind into the patch. Then, a couple hits of the exit key will take you back to the PERFORMANCE window.

By the way, always fiddle with the various other controls to see if anything happens when you change their parameters: the Mod Wheel, the Joystick, and the Key Pressure are most popular candidates, and the only way you can easily find whether they are incorporated into the patch is to play with them, as their modulation targets could be ANYWHERE in the patch or effects and not easy to hunt down without going through every page. All this flexibility in modulation assignments is great, but I've forgotten where I've put things! (Especially foot-pedal assignments). Wiggle and Jiggle. Use the ZONE window. Get happy! :-)

Very good tip Terry (use this to set up other windows that you want to jump to that haven't been assigned to a jump button as well) , however this can also be done another way. The programming structure of the Wavestation allows you to change performances from with-in the edit performance level. At the top of the edit performance page (this won't be of any good for the WSSR users on the list - the jump functions won't either for that matter - sorry!) you will see the Bank and Performance number - you can change this and it is the same as changing the performance except that you can see how many patches are being used and the zones page is still 2 button clicks away.

To take this tip a little farther, all of the editor pages (Wavesequencing, patch and performance) subscribe to this editing design. Meaning that if you hit "Patch" (after first hitting "Edit" from the top Performance page), you will see the Bank and patch location and patch name at the top of the list - if you change this, you are changing the patch that the zone you highlighted before hitting "Patch" is currently assigned to. Going deeper, if you then hit the "Waves" button, you will still see the info at the top of the screen and changing this will change the current zones patch WHILE you can see how many wave (1, 2 or 4) are used and what they are assigned to !!

Wavesequencing has this capability as well. If you go to a wave that is assigned to a Wavesequence, hit "WAVSEQ" to enter the Wavesequencing editor you will see at the top of the page the Bank, number and name of the current wavesequence. If you change this, you are changing the wavesequence that is currently assigned to the PATCH that you are editing. If you want some really interesting new sounds, simply go to a wacky Performance, find the patch that makes up most of the personality (if these are the factory patches, we often use patches to add just a little something to a patch that truly makes the performance - Air Vox and SynString are found in a lot of performances with a volume of under 20 to add something in this type of fashion).
